Cephalanthus occidentalis buttonbush, honey-balls

Buttonbush is a very interesting shrub, popular with collectors. Its main feature are flowers that are perfect spheres with tiny, pure white, tubular flowers. They are followed by small, green fruit. It flowers on current year’s wood. They have a nice scent and attract butterflies.

Deciduous leaves are mid green, ovate to elliptic, glossy and elegant. In southern countries they are evergreen. The shrub grows slowly or medium fast (upon soil conditions) 1-2m tall and about the same wide. To keep it dense and in a good shape we suggest cutting it back by removing minimum two thirds of last year’s growth. Do it every spring just before the leaves emerge.
