Mulovac kra SOBSLAV bark mulch

categorized

Bark mulch is a horticultural material that mimics the natural insulating layer formed in nature by the gradual fall of leaves, needles, bark, and withering plant parts. It retains moisture, protects against rapid temperature fluctuations, and as it decomposes, also serves as a source of nutrients. A consistent layer shields the soil from erosion, and a thicker layer helps suppress weed growth. In addition, it creates space for microbial life, which is essential for long-term soil health.

Mulching bark is made from various raw materials and doesnt always contain only desirable components. It is most commonly sourced from wood processing facilities primarily sawmills where it originates as a by-product. Its quality varies depending on how its processed and sorted. Cheaper products tend to have a shorter lifespan and require more frequent replenishment, as they often contain not only real tree bark but also a mix of less durable materials, such as fibrous wood chips, sawdust that quickly decomposes, and unsightly, poorly processed pieces of bark that are easily scattered by the wind.

product description:

Sobslav bark mulch belongs among the highest-quality products of its kind on the Czech market. It typically contains a mix of spruce and pine bark in a 1560 mm fraction. The proportion of light-coloured materials (fibrous wood) is minimal, and there are no large offcuts. Before packaging, the bark undergoes a composting period of varying duration, during which high internal temperatures cause light fermentation. This process helps suppress seed germination, reduces the presence of fungal threads and bacteria, minimizes parasites, and limits the release of resins that could overly acidify the soil. Still, slight acidification should be expected.

Fresh bark has a typically reddish-brown colour and a pleasant forest scent. Its suitable for all types of mulching and plantings both for decorative and practical purposes. To save material, we recommend using mulching fabric underneath the mulch: with it, a thinner layer (approx. 3 cm) is sufficient, and one 70-liter bag can cover about 1 square meter. The bark decomposes slowly, with the finest particles breaking down into plant nutrients over time, so its a good idea to replenish the layer roughly once every 12 years.
